This is designed to be used in conjunction with our fret slotting template to make slotting fretboards simple, accurate and quick - every time.

Made from robust 18mm plywood it has a 2mm index pin pre-installed, so that our fret template engages easily and accurately to give you super-precise fretboards. The bed is 90mm wide so it will cope with everything from narrow cigar box guitar fretboards to wide 12 string and classical guitar fretboards.

We've also added a hardwood depth stop - when used with our "Crown" Sheffield steel fretslotting saw, it will allow you to cut the correct depth every time with no guessing. It is set-up work with 6mm (1/4inch) thick fretboards to produce a kerf  2mm deep (suitable for most fretwire) when used with our brass-backed fretting saw. This also helps to keep the box stable and rigid. If you want a shallower slot you can simple remove the depth stops and shim up with veneer or a thin steel washer then refix, or to get a deeper cut, simply remove the depth stops, sand them down a little  to achieve the depth of slot that you prefer. You can use this process if you use fretboards which are thicker or thinner than 6mm to customise the mitre box to suit your own preferences.

PLEASE NOTE - we use a 2mm index pin which is already installed and set-up for use with our own template. This may not work with other manufacturers' templates as most others use a smaller diameter pin.  The box is set up to suit our 022" kerf saw, so if you intend using a different saw, you may need to adjust the box to allow for a different width sawblade. The box is screwed together so this allows for the fixings to be loosened and small adjustments to be made to cope with different saws and to allow adjustment to accommodate wear over a period of time of repeated use.

As well as the mitrebox on its own, we offer two packages - the mitre box and slotting template, and the full set of mitre box, template and saw. I always tell people that a good fret slotting saw is the one guitar-making tool that you should not try to economise on, and our new mitre box and template are the perfect partners to it.

Other manufacturer's templates are made with only one of the popular scales (Fender or Gibson) and then another one which nobody really seems to want...forcing you to buy another one if you want both scales! With our template you get two really useful scale lengths at a great price. For custom shorter scale lengths, you can simply miss out the first one or two fret slots. These templates are laser cut to a super-high level of accuracy on state of the art machinery, and we offer these at an unbeatable price. Made in the UK exclusively for Chickenbone John.

Simply attach the template to the back of the fingerboard with double sided tape, and saw each fret slot after locating the index pin (preinstalled in the mitre box) in the corresponding template notch. Move the template to the next notch, saw the slot and repeat - it really is that easy.

If you have struggled to do fret-slotting with with cheap, inferior tools, or if the whole idea of making a fretted fingerboards seemed too daunting, then the combination of our mitrebox, template and saw is the ideal solution.
